Kleine CERES No.7

2020, camphor, stucco, H14×W25×D14cm, Photo: Takayuki Daikoku

The concept of the work

Kleine Ceres No. 7 is a small (Kleine) sculpture on the theme of life cycle and memory, derived from CERES, the goddess of fertility in Roman mythology.

The shape is reminiscent of eggs, cocoons, and cells smoothly carved out of camphor, and the torus (ring) structure that runs through the center indicate the cycle of life and infinite possibilities, and are also symbols of a sign that life is about to be born, and a sign that something starts to move quietly.

I am exploring a sculptural approach based on material selection and physical actions, drawing on memories of natural landscapes from my childhood, Japan’s syncretic culture, and my experience of living in Germany for about six and a half years. Through this, I am deepening my interpretation of the forms and structures of nature, as well as natural and cultural diversity, while pursuing “the beauty of harmony in which heterogeneous elements coexist.”
