concept
Overview
This work is a limited edition silkscreen print that embodies the artist's own art theory “Grid Animism (Grid Animism).” The original sketch (original image of thought) of the wood carving work, which is the origin of this theory, was extracted into a flat space using silkscreen techniques.
Concept — Grid Animism
It is a unique theory that redefines the geometric “structure (grid),” which is a symbol of modern rationalism, not as a wall that excludes nature, but as a “instrument of resonance (barrier)” that purifies and amplifies invisible signs and life energy (animism).
Instead of mixing (compromising) the two principles of grid and animism, we practice “modern syncretism (syncretism),” which circulates and coexists within one body while maintaining differences.
Materiality
The biggest logical characteristic of this work is the selection of a material called “Bone Black (Bone Black)” used in the ink.
“Black” in the print: A black pigment produced by high-temperature carbonization of animal bones in an oxygen-free state. Its main component is calcium phosphate (bone).
“White” in sculpture: The traditional pigment “gofu (gofu),” which makes up the skin in three-dimensional works, is calcium carbonate made by weathering and grinding seashells.
Due to this material identity called “calcium,” planar “black” and three-dimensional “white” are deeply linked chemically and conceptually. The skeletal remains (calcium) that once supported life settle on another substance (paper or wood) as ink for prints or skin for sculptures, and breathing begins again. This is not simply a presentation of a visual diagram; I believe it is a ceremonial process of the “cycle of life” mediated by substances containing memories of death.

Artist
Sculptor
I am exploring a sculptural approach based on material selection and physical actions, drawing on memories of natural landscapes from my childhood, Japan’s syncretic culture, and my experience of living in Germany for about six and a half years. Through this, I am deepening my interpretation of the forms and structures of nature, as well as natural and cultural diversity, while pursuing “the beauty of harmony in which heterogeneous elements coexist.”
