Breath 1
2025, Camphor wood (partially charred), gofun, charcoal, 21×24×10cm, Photo: Takayuki Daikou
The concept of the work
Breath 1 is a wall-mounted sculptural work that harbors a quiet vitality, appearing as if it is gently exhaling a faint breath from the small opening at its apex.
Emerging from a geometric, linear base and swelling organically into space, the sculpture possesses a mysterious form—one that feels as though it might exist in the natural world, yet belongs nowhere in reality. It serves as a visual manifestation of the "premonition" of nascent life and the exact moment when hidden energy quietly begins to take shape.
The myriad chisel marks engraved on the surface, interwoven with the irregular rhythm of the white pigment, resemble microscopic cells pulsating with breath or the living epidermis of an unknown organism. Grounded in a structural framework (grid) at its base, yet rising smoothly to breathe softly into the outside world, this piece stands as a serene monument to a new beginning.
【Installation Note】 The artwork is designed for wall mounting. It is installed by seamlessly hooking the interlocking metal bracket on the back of the piece onto its corresponding wall-mounted counterpart, ensuring a secure and flush display.

Artist
Sculptor
I am exploring a sculptural approach based on material selection and physical actions, drawing on memories of natural landscapes from my childhood, Japan’s syncretic culture, and my experience of living in Germany for about six and a half years. Through this, I am deepening my interpretation of the forms and structures of nature, as well as natural and cultural diversity, while pursuing “the beauty of harmony in which heterogeneous elements coexist.”
