Work Details
This work was created with preserved salt at Salt Road Chojiya, which maintains the history of Omachi as a settlement that flourished as a post town on the Chikuni Kaido trade route. Yamamoto worked with the tradition of the kawagoshi dolls of tanabata, explaining, “I have been drawing with salt, which evokes ideas about purification and cleansing, as a means to retain the precious memories of people who left me at a young age, and as a prop to fight against forgetting, creating a bridge of memories transcending time and space.”

Using salt as his material, Yamamoto has long created installation works in which he draws huge patterns on the floor. At the end of these exhibitions, he destroys the work with the viewers, and the project is concluded by returning the salt to the sea. Photo by Toshiyo Suzuki In recent years, he has been working on two- dimensional pieces and digital drawings.
