Work Details
The title of this work is “Enough”(”Yohke”in Japanese). I'm from Okayama, so when I hear things like, "Yohke aruna...", which means "there's a lot of things...", that come to mind. Sound is linked to experience. Also, experience is linked to form.
I have been making sculptures using the Kanshitsu technique. Urushi lacquer has been associated with prayer since ancient times. Even though it's smooth, it's strong and intense. I have entrusted various forms to such Urushi, based on my own physical senses. As each person touches the work and comes into contact with each other through the work, sculpture made by Kanshitsu technique will have a rich luster.
I don't think simply touching a surface is “touching”. The front and back sides of our body and sculpture are all connected to form one. This work was made from the inside. This is because I tried to entrust the feeling that my heart swells, like when I took a deep breath, to Urushi. My ideal is for people of various origins to feel “living in the present” while touching the work, without relying on words or sight.
