Shéhérazade, les mille et deux nuits
Intallation / Sound installation art Flickering fluorescent light (glow starter), AM antenna, tuner/radio, amplifier, speakers (2ch stereo), etc. 2022 / 2021 / 2017
Exhibition: ClafT2022 “Come on, let's dance. Even though it's like this outside? Then my skirt flutters, flutters, flutters... (1974)”
@GALERIE JUILLET, 2022
“Shéhérazade, les mille et deux nuits” is a sound installation involving light/sight and sound/hearing.
It is a work that combines a straight tube fluorescent lamp that flickers (flickers) irregularly due to age, an AM radio, a loop antenna, and a playback device. Even though the antenna receives a specific AM radio broadcast in real time, the electromagnetic waves of a flickering fluorescent lamp, that is, a fluorescent tube that repeatedly discharges and turns off irregularly, interfere with invisible radio waves, and it appears as a phenomenon where light and sound are synchronized.
A story of time = machenes is set up in the gap between the device that reconverts the radio broadcast into sound and the “field”, and the story is transformed in a rich way. In the process of trying to go beyond the frame story, it can also be said that this work is trying to derive the next chapter of “One Thousand and One Nights.”
Exhibition: “at times, try to inquire into times” @Gallery K, 2021
“If you turn on the fluorescent light while listening to AM radio, noise is mixed with the radio at that time.”
Based on such everyday experiences, this work was announced in 2017. Both audible words and music are disturbed by electromagnetic waves emitted from fluorescent lights, and they continue to be spoken as new words and sounds only in this place now.
It was like catching a glimpse of Scheherazade's “even more interesting story” in “One Thousand and One Nights.”
