Work Details
This is a new series that combines UV relief printing with acrylic painting. I have named these small 15 cm square canvas works the “.icon” series. Based on the idea that all things—mountains, rivers, plants, and trees—can attain Buddhahood, I depict a wide range of subjects, including Buddhist imagery, flowers, and digital devices.
There is a spirea shrub in the backyard of my house—an overgrown mass of spirea that stretches freely. Just as I begin to think how beautiful it is, it quickly comes to an end, and I find myself lingering in a loneliness like after fireworks have faded. Then, in front of the spirea, the kodemari begins to bloom. Slightly later than the spirea, it blossoms again in pure white. Compared to the refined elegance of the spirea, the kodemari feels a bit more playful. Its pom-pom-like flowers are cute and amusing. I wonder why “amusing” feels so enjoyable. Something that is both beautiful and fun is quite rare.
