abstract person #6

Race, gender, nationality, and appearance are just one element that makes up a human being, but it is difficult to completely escape categorization based on relationships with others or outward appearance factors. In the SNS society in particular, appearance is prioritized, and there is a tendency for the essence of human beings to be disregarded. However, what is essentially important is not appearance, but what the person thinks and feels.

This work is an attempt to reveal the inner world of humans that transcends appearance by applying the traditional Japanese technique “sharpening,” applying multiple layers of acrylic paint and scraping. It aims to depict the multilayered and invisible nature of humans while questioning superficial values and limitations of categorization in modern society.

MANABU KISHIMOTO seeks to depict the very essence of human “existence” by scraping away layers of paint.
His work applies the traditional Japanese technique of “grinding out,” using water to grind away layers of acrylic paint applied over and over. This reveals traces of complexly overlapping colors beneath the scraped surface.
Through this act of “scraping,” he attempts to strip away boundaries drawn by society and attributes imposed later, revealing the pure essence of human existence—the simple fact of being.
