I am who I am -011-
Race, gender, color, and nationality are components that shape me
However, it is only a partial component.
Sometimes we categorize others by outward factors through our own biases due to that partial component.
I exist in relationships with others, and for those of us who live within categories positioned as others, it may be close to impossible to eliminate eyes from others.
However, I even feel the feeling of being caught up in the SNS society and being ignored for the presence of people in it.
However, what we should know is not the overpainted appearance, but what that person thinks and feels.
The self that exists while fluctuating between self and others.
And I categorize others.
I am the only one who realizes that I am who I am.
This work is an attempt to depict individual humans behind their external appearance by applying multiple layers of acrylic based on a method called sharpening lacquer paint and scraping off excess parts.

MANABU KISHIMOTO seeks to depict the very essence of human “existence” by scraping away layers of paint.
His work applies the traditional Japanese technique of “grinding out,” using water to grind away layers of acrylic paint applied over and over. This reveals traces of complexly overlapping colors beneath the scraped surface.
Through this act of “scraping,” he attempts to strip away boundaries drawn by society and attributes imposed later, revealing the pure essence of human existence—the simple fact of being.
