Work Details

This installation work begins with the discovery of a robot discarded on the street, overlaying the gaze apparatus of 19th-20th century “human exhibitions” (World's Fairs and ethnographic spectacles) with the anticipated display of robots/AI in the near future. As technology advances and appearance and responses become more human-like, we conversely seek to measure “what it means to be human”—and it is precisely this measurement (the metrics) that becomes institutionalized and part of the exhibition. The work creates a quiet sense of unease and withholds judgment at the intersection of human mechanization and machine anthropomorphism, returning the criteria for evaluation back to the audience themselves.
