True Rouge

1970年代半ば以降、トゥンガはドローイング、彫刻、インスタレーション、映像、ビデオ、パフォーマンスなど、イマジネーションに溢れた作品を制作してきた。トゥンガがマルチメディアを用いるのは、哲学、自然科学、文学が視覚芸術と手を携えている学際的な分野としての芸術を理解することと関連しており、それは、現象の理論と実践の解離を避け、作品について考えることの一部として物理的な行為を理解することでもある。アーティストにとって、科学とファンタジー、現実とフィクションの間の限界を超えて、個人的な神話を創造することは、重要なことであることが多い。彼はパフォーマーを雇って、儀式的なパフォーマンスを行うことによって作品の幕開けをおこなうことがある。また、パフォーマンスやインスタレーションではなく、ポルトガル語のinstauração（セットアップ）という言葉を使って作品名をつけているが、これは、行為に伴って何かが生まれてくることを最もよく表す言葉だからである。《True Rouge》はこの作品群に属す。裸のパフォーマーが、天井から吊るされたオブジェと相互作用を行い、 赤い粘性のある液体が入った容器が、パフォーマーとガラスの上にこぼれる。この作品は、タイトルにもなっているサイモン・レーンの詩に由来しており、フランス語と英語の間の言葉遊びを使って、赤による空間の占有を表現している。天井から吊るされたオブジェは、相互に依存した構造で結ばれており、壮大な人形劇を暗示している。オブジェは重力を利用した彫刻作品として存在するが、決して地面にふれることがないのである。

Since the mid-1970s Tunga has created works of drawing, sculpture, installation, film, video and performance that teem with imagination. His drive to use multimedia is linked to an understanding of art as a multidisciplinary field in which philosophy, natural sciences and literature go hand in hand with the visual arts; it is about understanding the physical actions of a work of art as part of thinking about it, avoiding a dissociation between theory and practice in one and the same phenomenon. It is often important for the artist to go beyond the limits between science and fantasy, reality and fiction, leading to the creation of a personal mythology. In several of his works the artist hires performers to carry out something like performance rituals, inaugurating the work. He uses the Portuguese word instauração (setting-up) to name his works, rather than performance or installation, because the word best defines something that comes into being with the act. True Rouge belongs to this group of works. Naked actors interact with the hanging objects: recipients containing a viscous red liquid that they pour on themselves and the flasks, in a reference to life cycles. The work springs from the poem by Simon Lane that gives it its title, describing the occupation of space by red, using puns between French and English. The objects suspended from the ceiling, linked by interdependent structures, allude to a grand puppet theater: a sculpture of manipulation using gravity without, however, touching the ground.

Desde meados dos anos 1970, Tunga cria obras de um imaginário exuberante em desenho, escultura, instalação, filme, vídeo e performance. Seu impulso multimídia está associado a uma compreensão da arte como campo multidisciplinar, em que filosofia, ciências naturais e literatura andam ao lado das artes visuais; trata-se de compreender as ações físicas de uma obra como parte do pensamento sobre ela, evitando-se a dissociação entre teoria e prática de um mesmo fenômeno. Não raro, para o artista é importante também ultrapassar os limites entre ciência e fantasia, realidade e ficção, resultando na criação de uma mitologia própria. Em vários de seus trabalhos, o artista contrata performers para realizar algo parecido a rituais performáticos, inaugurando a obra. Para denominar estas obras, prefere o termo instauração a performance ou instalação, que definiria de maneira mais satisfatória algo que, a partir daquele ato, começa a existir. True Rouge pertence a este grupo de trabalhos. Na instalação, atores nus interagiram com os objetos pendentes: recipientes que contêm um líquido viscoso, vermelho, que derramam sobre si e os vidros, remetendo aos ciclo vitais. O trabalho surge do poema que lhe dá título, escrito por Simon Lane e que descreve uma ocupação do espaço pelo vermelho, valendo-se de trocadilhos entre a língua inglesa e francesa. Os objetos que pendem do teto, unidos por estruturas interdependentes, aludem a um grande teatro de marionetes: uma escultura de manipulação, que, se valendo da gravidade, não chega, contanto, a tocar o chão.
