作品詳情
2022-/ Thermal Paper, Frame (Installation When Displayed: Material Variable)/ Framed Certificate: H20 cm × W25.6 cm × D2.8 cm (Installation When Displayed: Variable)
The concept of the work
This is a site-specific installation artwork that considers actions such as relocating, exchanging, and organizing objects in a given space as the artwork itself. Here, a Certificate of Authenticity is sold, which also functions as a document granting execution rights.
The certificate is sold in an unfilled state, and the purchaser may request the artist to execute the artwork at any time of their choosing. Once the execution is complete, the certificate undergoes a thermal processing treatment, causing it to turn black, visually indicating that the execution has been carried out. Subsequently, the artwork’s title, execution date, and the artist’s signature are recorded on the certificate before it is returned to the purchaser.
The title of the artwork is renamed as an anagram based on the name of the location where it was executed.
KUBOTAOGUISS’s practice focuses on an aspect of cultural assets as a liability; his work often evades the physical creation of new objects, by means of temporary transfer of existing goods, making pacts, and undertaking other people’s liabilities. In his recent works, KUBOTAOGUISS has explored the communal ownership of objects, and ways to deal with a wide variety of liabilities, on levels ranging from the personal to the whole of humanity.
Testimonials
Kubotaoguiss’ method of production that focuses on the primary or secondary sediments of processes, locations and time needed for the presentation of artwork, stimulates the viewer by incorporating into the artwork, even the capacity of thought generated by viewing. Living in contemporary Japan, we carry various tangible and intangible burdens and responsibilities from the personal to societal levels including finance; his series inspired from the liabilities hidden in daily life, presents the comprehensive question towards the entirety of our life’s business.

Artist
KUBOTAOGUISS Tomohiro focuses on the aspect of cultural assets as "debt," developing works that often do not involve physical creation through acts such as the temporary relocation of objects, contractual agreements, and assuming the debts of others. His practice critically examines how art intersects with institutional and economic systems through processes of ownership, management, relocation, and preservation. Recent works explore the relationships between ownership and accountability within communities, tracing how debt expands from individuals to organizations and ultimately to institutional frameworks, drawing from personal experiences and actual events.
