Beautiful Islands 2

The cuteness and beauty of cats themselves is perfect in and of itself.

So for me, through the motif of a “cat,” I create images of painting things like the feelings that distorted creatures called “humans” have.

The author Fujimoto moved to Naha, Okinawa in 1997. When I traveled to Taketomi Island in the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa prefecture, I also met cats that live strong and relaxed on the island. I created this work while remembering the scene at that time.

This work was exhibited at a solo exhibition held at the cat book specialty store “Shoshi Wagahaido” in Fukuoka city.

Some of the works exhibited at the solo exhibition held in Fukuoka in 2008 were works with cat motifs, and this exhibition was realized in 2019 when there was an offer from the owner of Wagahaido (although it had not yet opened at the time), “Why don't you do a solo exhibition with only works with cat motifs at Wagahaido?”

Even after the exhibition period, the same store carefully kept it as a permanent work, but the store readily agreed so that a wider range of users could touch it, and it was returned to the artist in early summer 2024.

This is a video of the grinding process for “Beautiful Islands 1 and 2,” which were produced simultaneously.

Like other works, it is a method of laminating acrylic paint and grinding. Therefore, the mattiere and color are common.

The title of the work with the cat as the main motif is often used or received from the title of the song. The song itself motivates me, and I'm inspired by the title song that fits the screen as production progresses.

Of course, you won't receive the music itself. Also, I don't have my own pictures to explain the song. It's just a sensory fit.

It's like that, and the title of this work starts with Okinawan folk songs. It is a song written after the war by a major composer known for many famous songs such as “Bashofu.”
