Work Details

Bingata dye on linen

This is an early representative work that was fully exhibited at the “VOCA Exhibition” in 2002 after his move to the United States. Feeling that traditional Okinawan culture had been cut off from its origins due to political pressure

from both the U.S. and Japan, Teruya created a groundbreaking expression of Okinawa’s present and its suffering in accordance with the traditional structure of Bingata patterns. The work was acquired by the British Museum in 2023 and became a major topic of conversation.
