イート・ロ・エキュー

　本展「eat ro ekyu」は、若手現代アーティストの久保田智広にとって初の個展となります。

久保田はインスタレーションやパフォーマンスなど複数のメディアを横断しながら、物事の価値基準や選別基準をテーマに制作を行っています。近年の制作では個人的な状況や実際にあった出来事をベースに、共同体によるモノの所有や、個人な体験を起点に広く人類全体にまでおよぶ広範な負債に対しての向き合い方について探る作品を展開してきました。

　こうした久保田の実践の背景には、作品制作を通して自らをとりまく環境の改善を目指す「対症療法的」な態度が通底しています。それは新たにモノを生み出し続けることに対して作家が感じる限界や、私たちを取り巻く社会的なシステムに対する疑問への彼自身による一つの応答だと言えます。また同時にそのような実践は、既存のモノの価値の読み替えや、そこからオルタナティヴな価値を生み出していく行為であるとも言えます。

　久保田は本展において、ギャラリーの空間を一変させます。元々あったEUKARYOTEの特徴的な壁は取り払われ、普段表に出ないバックスペースが露出されます。そして、スペース内に保管されていた取り扱いアーティストの作品や備品は、一時的に外部の倉庫へと移されます。

　こうした操作により、久保田はギャラリーの空間を、別の運用方法を試行する実験的かつ宙吊りな空間へと変容させます。また元々ギャラリーにあったものを用いて空間を構成することで、既存のものに異なる可能性を見出します。こうした試行の背景には、作家が感じる新たなモノを生み出すことへの疑問や限界、そしてそれが抱えうる未来に対する負債への懸念が見受けられます。

　そのような彼の態度は、本展のタイトルである「eat ro ekyu」、すなわち会場の名前のアナグラムにも表れています。作家が「単なる模様替えでしかない」と語る本展の試みは、既存の価値の組み替えであり、よりよい空間や環境を目指す試行錯誤であると言えるでしょう。一方でそのような取り組みは、かつてホワイトキューブの空間をはじめ、美術の世界を規定する社会経済的な枠組みへと批判の意識を向けた制度批判のアーティストの手つきを思わせます。

　このように本展はEUKARYOTEという会場を一つのケーススタディとして、ギャラリーという空間の別のあり方、ひいては一つの有機的なシステムを新たに創出することを目指します。こうした作家による現代美術の可能性をめぐる実験的な試みをぜひご高覧下さい。

This exhibition "eat ro ekyu" is the first ever solo show by an emerging contemporary artist Tomohiro Kubota.

Kubota’s practice examines our ethical values and moral criteria, traversing multiple mediums and disciplines including installation and performance. In his recent works, Kubota has placed a focus on collective possession within a community and explored how we can deal with a variety forms of debts as an individual at the same time as the human beings.

Underlying Kubota's practice is an attitude which he expresses with a metaphor of symptomatic treatment that seeks to improve his own environment through the creation of artworks. This approach illustrates the artist’s question towards the current situation of the capitalism which drives to keep producing new things. This also can be overlapped with the figure of artist who continues to create new works. Such a practice is at the same time an act of finding another aspect in existing things and creating alternative values from them.

For this exhibition, Kubota completely changes the layout of the venue. The original wall of EUKARYOTE which has a distinctive shape was removed, exposing a backspace that used to be hidden from the visitors. Artworks and equipments stored in the space accordingly have been moved to a warehouse during the exhibition period.

Kubota transforms the gallery into a suspended and experimental space in which an alternative methods of operation will be demonstrated through these operations. Further, he finds new meanings in the existing objects that were originally in the gallery through reconstructing the space with them. Behind these trials, we can see the artist's doubts and limitations in creating new things, as well as his concern about the debts they may have for the future.

This attitude is also reflected in the title of this exhibition, "eat ro ekyu," an anagram of the gallery's name. The artist describes the aim of this exhibition as "a redecoration." It is a reconfiguration of existing values, and at the same time a trial and error process intended to create a better space and environment. On the other hand, such approaches reminds us of the works by institutional-critique artists in the 1970s/1980s, who criticized the institutions/systems of the white cube, and turned their critical attention to the socioeconomic frameworks that defined the art world.

This exhibition “eat ro ekyu” aims to try a new system of the gallery space and, by extension, to create a new organic system, using EUKARYOTE as a case study. We hope you will come witness this experimental attempt by Kubota to explore a possibility of the entire space at his first ever solo exhibition at EUKARYOTE.
