When I was in Portland for a residency in the summer of 2018, I made it a daily practice to take morning and evening walks around the Chinatown hotel where I was staying. Walking through the same neighborhood every day, I began to notice subtle changes. It was on these walks that I saw writing on walls and the act of graffiti removal. Scrawled on the exteriors of businesses in the night were bubble letters, tags, irregular lines, and repeated scratch marks that appeared to be made with a knife. During the day, the writing was erased by business owners and citizens without any attention paid to the presence or content of these marks. Left behind were layers of rectangular muted colors on the walls like an abstract painting. This activity seemed to go beyond simple maintenance of the city’s landscape. I saw a special poetry in this strange communication and its traces, taking place quietly and almost every day, like letters exchanged between strangers between night and day. - For the last year, I have been exchanging emails with an Iranian friend. It all started when I was looking for someone to teach me Persian because I wanted to incorporate the title of my favorite movie, an Iranian film, in a tattoo design. We talk about the weather, current events, and our day-to-day lives. I cook from the recipes that they teach me. My friend takes videos of their writing and shares pictures of their favorite words or phrases, and I learn by tracing their handwriting. As I trace, there are moments when I feel the shakiness of my friend’s lettering and perceive how my own lines stray from or overlap with theirs. During this practice, which transcends simple language learning, I become aware of the environment that surrounds me and the presence of my friend who I have never met in person. - When I create my work, I line up multiple canvases and work on them simultaneously using oil painting and staining processes. My motifs are various. A fragment of a conversation heard through a window. A slight breeze felt passing a stranger. Leftover food cooling down or going bad. The afterimage of light when I close my eyes. The sound and vibrations of a train. The fresh stains of dog urine on street poles. It is important for me to be aware of a sense of presence and atmosphere, in both the motifs and the act of painting, and to continuously move between them.
