I use prints and photographs to express the gaps and discrepancy with my surroundings that come from the ambiguity of my identity.

I have always felt a discrepancy with my surroundings as a third-generation Japanese-Brazilian living in Japan, inside a mix of both cultures and languages.

There is a process of etching in printmaking, causing small discrepancies from the ideal image to happen.

I create artwork on the things I have come to see and the place I feel home, as if to accept the ambiguity by projecting my own discrepancies onto that of the plate.

Testimonial

Torigoe is an artist whose production is themed around the ambiguity and discrepancies in identity, her works are largely influenced by her experience growing up in Japan as a third generation Japanese-Brazilian.

She mainly creates prints based on her family and relating memories.

Combining techniques such as copperplate printing and inkjet printing, her work uses methods that are not absolutely controllable to express her ideal self, the ideal environment, and the dilemma of not matching with reality; the overlapping images begin to rise as an existence in her work because they appear misaligned.
