作品のコンセプト・制作意図
Whale latitude鯨は古くから神秘的な生物として繰り返し引用され、近代では生と死のシンボルとして、また経済用語の中に登場する。この作品ではそれぞれ白とカラフルな配色が西洋文明を、また日本人が唯一もつ美的感性であり美しいとされる"黒"の2つの要素が平面上で構成されており、鯨はその二つを越境する存在として象徴的に描かれている。黒がもつ不穏さは新たな挑戦をする時、また異なる性質やジレンマを抱える人間が普遍的にもつ内的葛藤を表しており、そうしたユニークさや人間存在の不安定さをこの作品では肯定したいという願いが込められている。Longitude(経度)とLatitude(緯度)は地図で使用される座標であり、モチーフの鯨の運動性がどの方向を示しているのかをそれぞれ説明している。
