Work Details
Can humans see what AI didn't see?
AI has learned vast amounts of information created by humans, and it has become a system that is insensitive to our perception. However, within it, information is processed according to different principles than humans.
“LATENT FLOWERS” is a work in which differences (differences) that occur in the process of AI compressing and reconstructing images of flowers are reconstructed as paintings by human hands. The starting point is an artificial flower created by Florist. When an image of a flower is compressed with AI and restored again, it looks almost the same flower to the human eye. However, when information that was not retained in the process is retrieved, colors and patterns that are difficult to recognize as flowers appear.
In this work, humans interpret these differences and draw while finding colors and shapes. Will we be able to sense “flowers” again from information that AI did not leave behind?
Production process
Artificial flowers created by Florist are photographed, and the images are compressed and reconstructed into latent space (Latent Space) with Stable Diffusion's variational autoencoder (VAE). Differences (differences) from the original image were extracted and emphasized by ternalization processing (Tri-tone). Using this structure as a sketch, humans reconstructed it by hand on canvas while interpreting shapes and colors.
