Work Details
Can humans see what AI didn't see?
AI has learned vast amounts of information created by humans, and it has become a system that is insensitive to our perception. However, within it, information is processed according to different principles than humans.
“RAW FLOWERS” is a work depicting differences (differences) that occur in the process of AI compressing and reconstructing images of flowers. At first glance, a silver screen with almost nothing drawn on it. However, depending on the angle of light and the position of the viewer, fine irregularities emerge. What is there are traces of human hands tracing, scraping, and leveling information that was not retained due to AI reconstruction. I'm not drawing it to look like something, and I'm leaving the differences as direct as possible.
Information meaningful to AI and information meaningful to humans do not necessarily match. By touching on these differences, we ask ourselves again what we “see.”
Production process
An image taken of a flower is compressed and reconstructed into latent space (Latent Space) with an AI variational autoencoder (VAE), and differences from the original image are extracted. Unlike other LATENT series, it was reconstructed by hand on canvas while suppressing interpretation of color and form, with the intention of retaining the differential structure as directly as possible. The process of layering, scraping, and polishing paint is repeated, and fixed as fine irregularities. By unifying the entire screen in silver, it is finished in a painting where traces of differences emerge due to reflection of light.
About the background of the work
We are discussing the production background of “RAW FLOWERS” and the differences in perception between AI and humans through dialogues with florist engineers.
