ギリシア神話に登場する半人半鳥の怪物はセイレーン。航海する船に近づいては得意の歌声を響かせて船乗りたちの気を狂わせ、座礁させたり沈没させたり。そしてその船乗りたちを襲い食らっていたとされる。
オデュセウスとともに登場する話が有名。
