Horseman

The enchantment for animals and for supernatural beings, half human, half animal, they remind mythologies and remote divinities. As the latency of an old memory, where the human is seen as a living part of the divinity and of the animal world. In Brazilian rural universe, there are several artists that work the man/animal relationship as if they were a same unit. It is the case of this work.

Homem cavalo

Ulisses Pereira Chaves was born in 1929 in the location of Córrego Santo Antônio, close to Caraí, in Vale do Jequitinhonha, MG. Raised in a pottery environment, he proceeds with his family’s activities. Soon his works call the attention for the originality and for the fact that the production of the utilitarian and figurative pottery is a women’s job in his region. When he was a child, he used to model animals such as little birds and cows. As an adult, he innovates the traditional forms and develops very personal sculptures: anthropomorphous and zoomorphous figures, fantastic beings with several heads, birds with human feet, etc. Under his leadership, during a long time, his eight children and his wife Maria José kept a true craft shop. Today, only some of them persist. Ulisses is considered as one of the most important potters of Vale do Jequitinhonha.
