Work Details

Woman praying

About the work: The work presents a woman who prays, at a household altar, to Our Lady of Conception Aparecida, Brazil’s Patroness. In its origin, the popular art may be related to the dominant Catholic culture in the country until mid 20th century. That’s why many artists started in the clay modeling and wood carving arts creating cribs for Christmas time, or even images and figures of the sacred iconography with the intention of decorating churches. With the decline of the religious life as protagonist, many craftspeople developed personal and authorial works, establishing themselves as artists.

Mulher rezando
