Work Details
It is a mask used by a knight, during cavalhadas (horse riding parade), a Catholic feast honoring the Divine Holy Spirit, which takes place all over Brazil. Cavalhada includes the horse riding and disputes, performances that date back to European Medium Age, and which are inspired by the battles under the command of the Catholic French King Charlemagne. The Masked People are transgressive characters, which motivation is to challenge the rules of the feast, play with the audience, entertain people, and promote acrobatics with their decorated horses. The mask is used as a disguise, and those who use it shall not be recognized. For such, the participants change their tone of voice, and invent different accents. Therefore, the masks take such place of contesting the effective order and, for such reason, the identity of those whose door shall be protected. They are an essential part of the performance.
