Architectural highlights POINT

Historic buildings and modern buildings such as the main hall, the international Zen dojo, and tea rooms are scattered in the nature of the Seto Inland Sea, which is surrounded by red pine trees, and you can enjoy zazen meditation, copying sutras, and appreciating ink marks and contemporary art. The main gate, which is the entrance to the precincts, was once located at the former Kayanomiya Palace (Kayanomiya Yatei) in Kyoto but was taken over by Kaiji in 1967 and relocated there. When you pass through the main gate, the temple office Shodo, Kotei, bathroom, Gankuin (Gankuin), etc. are arranged to surround the Shoshin Garden of the Ikeizumi Kaiyu Style Garden created by the Nakane Garden Research Institute. Among them, two modern buildings are worth mentioning. The temple office “Shodo” (completed in 2014) was designed by Fujimori Terunobu, who is active as an architect and architectural historian, and features pine trees planted on the roof. Also, “Koutei” (completed in 2016) is an architectural work by world-renowned sculptor Kohei Nawa and the creative platform “SANDWICH.” The space is inspired by a 45-meter-long boat composed of soft curves, and is built so that it floats on a rust-stone garden resembling an ocean. The interior space is an installation space that combines the world of art and Zen.
