In 1997, he began his career as an artist in Europe, targeting “ordinary people who aren’t usually interested in art” as his audience and adopting a style that moves away from the confines of the art world—such as museums and galleries—to install works outdoors. He views “the expansion of human imagination” as the raison d’être of art and creates his works using “laughter, violence, and sexiness” as his tools. Major exhibitions include “CHILDHOOD Another banana day for the dream-fish” (2018, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France), “BEPPU PROJECT” (2017, Beppu, Oita), “Solo Group Show” (2015, HAB Galerie, Nantes, France), “Manifesta 10” (2014, The Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia), “TATZU NISHI Discovering Columbus” (2012, Public Art Fund, New York, USA), “Singapore B iennale” (2011), “Aichi Triennale” (2010), “War and Peace and in Between” (2009, Calder Art Projects, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia), “Sherry in the Heavens” (2006, Maison Hermès, Ginza, Tokyo ), “Ecstasy” (2005, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, USA), “Yokohama Trien ” (2005), “Liverpool Biennial” (2002, UK), and many others. In 2018, he received the 68th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for the Arts, and in 2013, the Nissan Art Award 2013 Jury Special Prize. In 2011, he won the Grand Prize in the “Relax & Consume” category of The Great Indoors Award 2011, sponsored by Frame Magazine.
