《Walk on the Wild Side》
今年、大学院を卒業し、就職という決められた道には進まず、作家として活動しています。学校という所属する場所を離れ、これから自分がどこへ向かっていくのか、まだはっきりとは分かっていません。何もないところから自分の道を作っていかなければならない一方で、今はまだ道そのものを探しているような感覚があります。森の中を歩きながら、どこへ続いているのか分からない道を探しているような、不安と期待が入り混じった時期です。
「Walk on the Wild Side」というタイトルには、そんな今の自分自身を重ねています。決められた道から少し外れて、まだ知らない場所を歩いてみる。そんな気持ちで制作を続けています。
本展では、動物や自然をモチーフにした作品を中心に、学部時代から現在までに制作した作品を展示します。自然の中では、人間が作った国境や文化の境界は存在せず、動物たちはそれぞれの場所を自由に生きています。私自身も、ひとつの文化や国、決められた枠に完全に属することなく、自分の居場所を探しながら作品を作ってきました。
作品の中に広がる世界を、どこか特定の文化に属するものとしてではなく、自由に歩き回ることのできる場所として楽しんでもらえたらと思っています。

Japanese mineral pigment painter
Jalyn Tokie. Born in 2000 in the state of Maryland U.S. Graduated from Musashino art university majoring in Japanese painting. Was in a U.S. military camp in Japan during elementary school, and later moved to the state of Alabama during middle and high school. As a biracial artist, I always think about how I can express my identity through my work.
