Work Details

This work was inspired by the idea of Japanese education as being like a glider, guiding us toward a safe and stable landing. However, the character is not looking toward the place where it will land, but instead gazes in the direction of its flight. The work expresses a desire to keep moving forward, seeking new challenges and possibilities beyond what is considered safe or stable.

Hajikaku-chan is a character that reflects the discomfort or desire towards my gender; beginning with drawing, I continue to depict my internal conflict through Hajikaku-chan, gaining hints from the distance between myself and the character. In my practice, I pay particular attention to the expression of lines that derives from drawing, and the gradation characteristic to oil paints.

My feelings of admiration, desire and helplessness towards gender, became rooted deeply inside of me and began to have a shape without my knowing. These then manifested as a character – this is Hajikaku-chan. In the unstable understanding and familiarity, that Hajikaku-chan is a complete stranger although somewhat resembling of myself, by confronting it, I give shape to the irrepressible feelings that are inside of me.

Actively producing, organizing, and designing visual identities for solo and group exhibitions.
