Concept and Intention of the Artwork

"Ember" is about the small light that remains within us, even in the deepest darkness. At first, it may be barely perceptible, but it carries the quiet strength to grow and bring warmth even to the coldest moments. As the darkness closes in, the light does not disappear. It continues to glow, not as a fierce flame, but as something steady and enduring. It is that inner light that can guide us forward, even when we cannot yet see the path ahead.

What You Want to Express Through the artwork

Through this work, I wanted to express the idea that even when everything around us feels dark or uncertain, a quiet sense of light can still be found within us. It may not always be clear or easy to recognize, but it can exist quietly beneath the surface and give us a sense of direction. For me, this light does not have one definite meaning. It can take different forms depending on what we carry within ourselves and what we are going through.

Production Methods and Tools

0.3 mm mechanical pencil (graphite) on paper, hand-drawn

Production Time

Approximately 1 month

Production Location

Odesa, Ukraine

Thoughts on the Artwork and Title

I chose the title Ember because I was drawn to the image of a small, glowing presence that holds warmth without needing to burn brightly. There is something quiet and intimate about an ember, and I felt that it reflected the feeling I wanted this work to carry. Rather than representing a clear answer or a strong source of light, it suggests something subtle that can be felt and recognized in its own way.

Pliska Dasha

Contemporary Artist and Illustrator

Pliska Dasha is a Ukrainian artist based in Tokyo. Her drawings come out of the feelings people tend to carry silently — memory, love, longing, the unspoken wish to be understood — and try to give those feelings a place to rest.
She believes art is one of the few spaces where we are allowed to meet our own emotions without fear, without needing to name them or resolve them. Everything in her practice follows from that belief: the hand on paper, the slowness, the monochrome, the willingness to leave a drawing quiet rather than dress it up.
She was born in Odesa, and the war in Ukraine moves through her work as a shadow rather than a subject. It is the reason she pays attention to small, tender things and trusts them. What she hopes a viewer finds in her drawings isn't a statement about any of this — only the recognition of a feeling they already knew, and the permission to feel it for a moment without having to hide it.
