Work Details
Powerful brushstrokes envelop the canvas, accompanied by dynamic "cracks" running through the multiple, overlapping layers of paint.
The Rear Window series by Mika Ieda takes paint—typically perceived merely as a "tool for depiction"—and elevates it to the role of the protagonist, drawing out its material energy to the absolute limit. Engaging in a deep dialogue with the textures and colors of acrylics, Ieda constructs her compositions by thickly layering the paint.
The core of this series lies in the "cracking" that occurs as the paint dries and shrinks on the canvas. Occurring beyond the artist’s intent or control, this physical phenomenon visualizes the accumulation of "time" and "chance" passing between the human and the material, manifesting as striking fissures.
The title Rear Window derives from Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece suspense film, a story where a confined protagonist peers through a window to observe the unpredictable actions of his neighbors. Ieda parallels herself with this protagonist, observing the unpredictable changes (or "incidents") brought about by the materiality of the paint within the confined frame of the canvas.
Thus, this work is far more than a mere still image. Through the "window" of the canvas, the viewer is invited to peer into the traces of a vital, dynamic phenomenon initiated by the paint itself. (Miaki Gallery)
