Work Details

“Home Comforts” refers to things and environments that make everyday life comfortable, soothing, and reassuring.

This series was created in early 2021, nearly a year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid restrictions on daily life, the works are drawn with a sense of gratitude toward the objects that continue to quietly support everyday comfort—such as a showerhead and shampoo in the bathroom, houseplants and an air purifier in a private room, or a vacuum cleaner and futon stored in a closet.

The production process is based on the methods developed in the Real Clothes series. However, in this work, oil paint is not used along the edges; instead, a mixture of ground material and colored chalk powder is applied.

This approach creates a distinctive texture along the perimeter of the image, clarifying the relationship between the motif and the support.

While the artist has consistently explored a reversal of the figure–ground relationship in painting, in the Real Clothes series the ground layer was concealed beneath oil paint.

In contrast, in this work—created after The Rooster—the ground material (gesso) is fully exposed across the entire surface, actively incorporating the support itself into the pictorial space.

Born in Yokohama in 1995, raised in Iwakura and Nagoya, Aichi. Kiichiro Kobayashi graduated from Musashino Art University in 2018.

Since high school, he has explored how perception changes the appearance and value of things. His graduation project, Real Clothes I–III, combined dyed fabric based on photographic pixel data with images drawn from observation, examining multiple aspects of a subject, memory, perception, materials, and process. He has continued working on dyed fabric since then.

In 2020, The Rooster was selected as a finalist for the 22nd “1_WALL” Graphic competition. It used differences between human and avian color vision to examine how perceivers experience different worlds.

Through painting, including works on dyed fabric, drawing, and digital media, he explores how worlds arise through perception. Using memories, dreams, and experiences, he examines how meaning, judgment, and reality are formed through restrained lines and colors, materials, and repetition.
