Work Details
茶の湯文化が人々の暮らしに根付く町、岡山県倉敷市玉島。この町の茶の湯文化は200年以上の歴史があり、最盛期には町全体で400もの茶室があったといわれ、現在でも40ほどの茶室が残っているのが確認されている。限られたエリアにこれだけの茶室が現存する例は全国的に見ても稀である。そんな玉島で、岡山四大茶会のひとつである良寛茶会が行われる円通寺をはじめ、町に残る茶室のいくつかを活用した展覧会「茶室と現代美術」が開催された。
この滄浪亭も玉島に残る茶室のひとつ。藪内流という流派の様式で120年以上前に建てられたものである。藪内流では茶室に七つの光の採り口を設けることが基本とされており、当初はこの茶室もその理念に基づいて造られていたのだが、ある諸事情で茶室の大きな特徴でもある躙り口を取り壊してしまったため、現在では光の採り口が六つとなってしまっている。今回はその躙り口を照明作品で再現し、失われてしまった七つ目の光を復活させた。

I have been mainly creating and presenting three-dimensional works and installations.
I make artworks that cannot be created in any other location because they are strongly connected to the site, both physically and conceptually, utilizing the features of the space where the works are presented, the story of the place, and the surrounding environment. In most cases, I use different materials, production methods, and styles of expression to suit the space each time.
In addition to creatingmy own works, I am also actively involved in exploring personal and international connections between artists, such as organizing exchange gatherings for artists of all genres, and launching and managing art exchange projects between Japan and Mexico.
