西川茂のSealed House シリーズ。街中で見かける養生シートで覆われた建設中、或いは解体中の建物をモチーフにし、都市風景の「破壊と再生」を主題に独特の筆致と色彩で描いた油彩作品です。

このSealed Gate-宮島-は、現在大規模な保存修理工事が行われている宮島嚴島神社の大鳥居がシールドに覆われた佇まいがモチーフとなっています。

海上に立つ嚴島神社の大鳥居は繊細かつ雄大で、人の心を動かしつづけてきた。ただ、工事のために囲われるとよく見えない。それでも、なぜか惹かれてしまう。それは囲いが、修復されて更新されていくことを示しているからだろう。残すための営みの姿は、大鳥居そのものにも負けない。
