1923年(大正12年)9月1日、関東大震災が日本を襲った。

下町の大半がなぎ倒され、東京は文字通り焼け野原と化す甚大な被害を受けている。ただ、その荒廃の中から、新しい文化の萌芽が見られたことも事実だ。例えば震災の直後、「考現学」の創始者・今和次郎は、吉田謙吉らと共に「バラック装飾社」を結成し、「野蛮人の装飾をダダイズムでやる」として、次々と建ち上がるバラック群のファサードに、ペンキで絵を描いたのだった。

現代で言えば、彼らの手つきはさながらグラフィティ・ライターである。思えばヒップホップ・カルチャーもまた、ロバート・モーゼスが手掛けたニューヨークの都市計画の「失敗」によって、サウス・ブロンクスの瓦礫から生まれたものだった。

未だ3.11の記憶が生々しいのはもちろん、昨今の異常な「天気」がもたらす災害に日々苛まれている私たちは、今、ここから、どのような文化を立ち上げることができるのだろうか。

ひとまず私は、「バラック装飾社」のネガとして、関東大震災後の惨状を写す絵葉書の上に、現在の東京の街並みを描きつける。

Graduated from Hosei University Faculty of Letters, Department of Japanese Literature, and completed art school. From art and music to performance and criticism, we develop cross-disciplinary activities while being involved with diverse places and people as an independent.
