Work Details
Is death the end of this world, or the beginning of another?
If there truly is an afterlife, then a coffin becomes a cradle,
and what we hear is not a sutra but a song of birth.
Life is a bubble gun.
As long as the trigger is held,
countless delicate soap bubbles fill the air—
manifestations of human imagination, the span of one’s life, one’s very color.
They float, fall, burst, and vanish,
leaving only a faint, slippery trace.
Most living creatures, even as they decay,
nourish and shelter others in a shared ecosystem.
Humans, by contrast, isolate even their cremated bones,
disconnecting from nature entirely to embark on a journey into the imagination.
They circle through reincarnation, strive beyond Nirvana,
seeking complete release.
What does it mean to lead a life aimed at an ultimate ending?
Let us raise a gun to this world—already said to be over from the start—
and pull the trigger in anger at the fatal error of the self.
No matter the sorrow or fragility,
silence impermanence with the fleeting beauty of bubbles-as-bullets.
Viewed from outside the coffin,
this spectacle resembles the way we look upon human life
from the vantage point of an outsider.
This is the coffin that has been used for the past five years at the escape Bar White Out, a rare and well-worn coffin in which more than 100 people have had a near-death experience, having been buried alive in it. White mushrooms grow from its edge. A Bluetooth speaker is installed in the pillow inside the coffin, allowing visitors to play their favorite music. At the time of the exhibition, a song celebrating his birthday was playing.
A bubble gun, which shoots smoke-filled soap bubbles inside the coffin, is also installed inside the coffin and shoots them from inside the coffin toward the ceiling. This work will be completed by viewing the smoke soap bubbles coming down from the coffin.
