Hikari Yamaguchi

Born in Hokkaido in 1993, I majored in metalwork in the Department of Industrial, Interior, and Craft Design at Musashino Art University, where I completed my graduate studies in 2019. From the age of six, I practiced rhythmic gymnastics, expressing myself through physical movement. However, upon discovering my passion for metal crafts at university—particularly the vibrant hues of enamel—I began creating metal artworks that embody my physicality and artistic sensibilities.

The first time I worked with metal, I found it challenging to manipulate. However, I soon identified my niche: working with thin 0.3mm copper sheets, which allowed me to shape them by hand without relying on tools like hammers. Once the metallic canvas is prepared, I draw spontaneous lines and dots with enamel, free and uninhibited, reminiscent of the origami and doodles from my childhood. The wonder, excitement, and raw intuition I felt as a child are things that I strive to preserve. For me, handcrafting objects is a way to reconnect with those feelings.
