This exhibition “Otherness: An Inventory of Desire (The Sunset)” closely explores cultural identity and cultural production. Both works focus on the multifaceted nature of desire in areas such as identity, memory, assimilation, movement, and belonging through diverse themes and mediums. What is being carried out in this project is an elaborate attempt to unravel the intricately intertwined threads of historical stories, beliefs, rituals, and social structures (structures), and to reveal the complex entanglement between past and present. The artist uses geographical research and assemblage to reveal the indelible scars left by colonial rule, and deeply engrave them into a tapestry that should be called “the fabric of history.”

“Otherness: An Inventory of Desire (The Sunset)” aims to evoke the essence of forgotten traditions, and is metaphorically related to various materials produced and used in the past. The artist explores the lasting impact of colonial heritage on identity and culture through artistic creativity and storytelling techniques. Viewers confronted with these works will be encouraged to explore the complex interplay between individual desires and collective memory. This exploration traces the delicate landscape of cultural exchange while clarifying how historical events that were influenced by colonial rule continue to reverberate through social norms and values.

In Januario's works, revival of tradition and experimentation with materials function as powerful symbols, and the multi-layered nature of identity, memory, assimilation, movement, and belonging are expressed. This exhibition not only emphasizes the profound influence of external influences on the construction of culture and identity, but also encourages multifaceted consideration of how religious ideologies have shaped social norms in diverse contexts.

After all, “Otherness: An Inventory of Desire (The Sunset)” poignantly illustrates the resilience of a culture confronting colonial legacies. We believe that this work encourages thought about the pursuit of permanent meaning in a constantly changing situation of desire and cultural exchange, and brings viewers a journey of transformation.
