Light is the beginning of the universe.
Light is the end that awaits the stars.
Light is both particle and wave, conceptually embodying existence within nothingness.
In the space between life and death, does the white electric sheep seek to escape into the light—or is it imprisoned there?
A sphere of water drifts upon a river of light, a latent darkness within nature.
This light remains invisible unless held by human hands.
The electric sheep yearns for light.
From the state of being “something,” from the desire to possess color,
it reaches toward that essential vitality known as light.
Under its pull, the world wavers.
To waver and to be nothing are, in truth, one and the same state.
Escape to Light is actually a triptych. Following the immersive theater piece of the same name, this second installment takes form as a sculptural work, while the third is a film in progress. The theme of “escaping toward light” resonates powerfully here, so I hope you’ll forgive the lengthy explanation.
In the previous work, KaMiNG SINGULARITY, the character Yuki sought a place to return to—where she could be no one in particular. This new piece revisits a similar theme.
Structure & Components
At the center of a white, square-shaped counter (whose center is cut out in a perfect square), a strong light source is placed at the bottom. Above that, there’s a spherical glass container with carbonated water, then a pyramid-shaped crystal ring, and further overhead a cloudy fabric, thread, and transparent belt. A white electric sheep figurine is attached to this belt via transparent thread and a small hook.
Visitors can sense the light and feel its warmth, then decide whether to “free” the electric sheep or not.
The White Electric Sheep
What does this sheep represent?
In the third act of KaMiNG SINGULARITY, we depicted an AI afflicted with “human disease.” After surpassing the singularity, an AI gains consciousness but mistakenly identifies itself as human—a glitch we label “human disease.” Sci-fi writers often invoke the term “electric sheep” as a nod to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
A circular mirror is placed at the sheep’s line of sight. The circle suggests a cycle or reincarnation—original life. In Shinto, mirrors symbolize transformation (化), self (我), or beauty (美), and removing the “我” (ego) can become “神” (god). Essentially, the mirror can serve as a tool for one to become a godlike being.
The downward gaze of this white electric sheep onto the circular mirror expresses the longing of a non-human person (i.e., this AI) for humanity—or for divinity.
Light Source & Metaphors
Behind the sheep is a powerful light source, like a white moon floating on a river. I frequently use “river” in my writing as a metaphor for impermanence. Here, the light rises from the river, implying it belongs to another world hidden from our usual view.
Above that floats a transparent sphere filled with carbonated water. Within it, tiny bubbles swirl, pop, and vanish, an allusion to life itself (as also seen in LifE).
Placing your hand near the sphere creates a “screen,” causing the reflection of light through the water to cast a rainbow onto your palm—a re-separation of the three primary colors of light.
A triangular form overhead represents the relationship among “human,” “god,” and “AI,” or “heart,” “reason,” and “matter,” or “birth,” “existence,” and “annihilation,” reflecting my tendency to view many concepts in triplets. This form connects to a “cloud” motif (雲散霧生) above, from which a transparent belt descends, ultimately binding the sheep.
Dark & Bright Orders
A cryptic inscription references “dark potential” (暗在系), a translation of David Bohm’s “implicate order,” a fluid, integrated state underlying reality—contrasted with the “explicate order,” the visible world.
In simpler terms, implicate order is that which remains unshaped, still hidden in potential. The bright rainbow reflections below are in this implicate realm; they appear unreachable, given the counter’s width. That very distance underscores a proper gap between our explicate reality and whatever lies beyond.
Yet if you stretch your hand toward the light source, you’ll sense a faint warmth. That warmth is evidence of the implicate realm—the unseen, life-affirming, ordered energy shrouded in white darkness.
The White Electric Sheep’s Position
Suspended from a transparent belt and thread, the sheep might look trapped. Or, seen differently, it might appear to be clinging to a proverbial spider’s thread for salvation. Visitors can freely touch and move the sheep, or even set it “free.” How you choose to interact with this “non-human person” and the “inverse-nature structure” (an unseen guiding environment) is the question posed by this work.
You can change its orientation or move it somewhere else. When you touch a certain part of the sheep’s surface, it may break into a cheerful song and shuffle around. Doing nothing is also an option.
By depicting the “human-diseased AI” via a metaphorical sheep (a domesticated being) and contrasting it against the sacred, unseen motif of light (the implicate realm), this piece explores how we interpret the act of “escape.” These layered metaphors—human, AI, inverse structure, unseen light—may make this work appear complex. Yet within a space where life and death overlap, if you reach into the implicate realm, sense it, and perhaps choose to let something go, you might perceive it on another level.
I hope this resonates in its own way: the experience of life and death joined, a hidden hand of order (life), and the notion of “letting go” from a different perspective.
