Concept and Intention of the Artwork
Factory VIII belongs to a series of paintings devoted to industrial territories, factories and ports.
The painting focuses on the moment when an industrial site ceases to function only as infrastructure and becomes a landscape. At night, artificial light, smoke, water and architecture reorganise the place visually. Structures built for production acquire an unexpected presence, while the human activity that created them remains largely invisible.
Within Silent Cartography, these industrial landscapes confront the accelerated time of labour and construction with the slower duration of water, weather and the surrounding territory.

What You Want to Express Through the artwork
I wanted to explore the strange beauty and tension of an industrial landscape at night. The factory is simultaneously a place of production, an architectural structure and a temporary human presence within a much larger environment.
Rather than judging the site, I wanted to observe the ambiguity between attraction and threat: the beauty of artificial lights and rising smoke, and at the same time the physical weight of industry within the landscape.
Production Methods and Tools
Oil on canvas.
The painting is constructed through successive adjustments of colour, value, light and architectural structure. Dark areas are not treated as empty backgrounds: subtle variations within them allow smoke, buildings, water and artificial light to emerge gradually from the night.
Production Time
Completed in 2020.
Production Location
Fukuoka, Japan / Berlin, Germany.
Thoughts on the Artwork and Title
The title Factory VIII places the painting within the larger Factory series rather than identifying the industrial site by name.
This deliberate neutrality shifts attention away from a specific company or location and towards the factory as a recurring form in the contemporary landscape: a place of labour, transformation, energy and temporary human occupation.

French Painter & Architect HMONP
Nicolas Depetris is a French painter and architect HMONP working between Menton and Fukuoka. His series Silent Cartography examines what places retain: the traces of labour, construction, weather and time across industrial territories, cities, mountains and coastlines. Working primarily in oil, he rebuilds observed sites through displaced colour, compressed distance and architectural structure, placing human-made forms against slower geological time.
