About the work
This work is, so far, the first and only artwork in which I have depicted a classical still-life arrangement. As I worked with the familiar motifs of an apple and a plaster cast of the Venus statue, I became deeply aware of the way these objects have long been regarded as subjects to be observed, existing primarily as objects of the viewer's gaze.
In this painting, I sought not to portray the motifs as objects to be mastered, but as presences with agency and individuality. At the same time, I challenged myself to explore, through the medium of oil painting, an image that extends from the flat, graphic language of my lithographic practice.
It remains one of my personal favorite works.
