Chizuru Yamamoto

abstract painter

Lives in Nara. Since summer 2022, I have moved my focus from illustration to abstract painting, and I have been drawing pictures as if interacting with the screen while following the movements of my mind and hands. Currently, I create paintings in layers while accepting the changes and traces that occur between intention and chance. I aim for a painting where an image rises from the production process itself, without relying on a clear story or image. I started painting when I was able to remember. While continuing to do graffiti and everyday work, I majored in illustration at an art college. After graduation, I was involved in 2D/3D background production at a game development company and experienced visual production as a practical matter. Since then, I have continued to create while searching for ways to express myself, such as taking courses aiming to become an illustrator, working on ceramics, and holding solo exhibitions with figurative illustrations. In about 15 years of production, there were periods when I didn't know what to draw, and there were times when the axis of expression wasn't determined. However, in recent years, instead of forcibly organizing the experiences and feelings we have accumulated up until now, I have come to feel that it is natural to layer them directly onto a canvas, and production has begun to open up to abstract painting. Currently, I am creating paintings as layers while accepting changes and traces that occur between intention and chance. Instead of fixing the finished image, the emphasis is on the image standing up during the drawing process. As I create every day, I have a feeling that I honestly like my paintings more than before, and that feeling is at the center of my current production. Going forward, I would like to use this feeling as a clue to explore the accumulation of experience and time through painting.
