Work Details
Re-Materialization Waves "Silver Mouse Fish III"
This piece was produced in collaboration with a highly skilled woodworker in Takayama.
The prototype was carved out of wood from 3D data produced by the artist with the support of Karimoku Furniture Co. The work represents the process of transformation of a silvermouth fish (ayu) into a three-dimensional wave form. The ayu is depicted as a creature that feeds on river algae and tastes differently in different rivers.
The work is deeply related to Japanese classics and mythology. For example, ayu is said to be the fish that Empress Jingu caught with a hook that she threw into the river to divine the outcome of a battle. It is also related to Tenazuchi and Ashinazuchi, the parents of Princess Inada in the Susanoo Tan. This work was born from a journey of weaving ayu, myth, mirror, and digital reincarnation contexts as motifs for wood carving. Carved from 3D data and combined with woodworker Mr. Ito's technical skill, the work is prodigal in nature with mass as a substance between wave and creature.
