Work Details
Elements with different properties, organic matter and inorganic matter, are connected by fluid lines to form a single animal form. The organic curves of life and the inorganic structures that make up machines intersect, and while blurring each other's boundaries, a new outline of life is drawn. Paper, which is a medium of expression, is a material created by human technology while being derived from plants, and contains relationships between nature and man. The act of cutting out that paper is also a process of disassembling an existing form and reconstructing it into a new structure. Materials, structures, and forms are interrelated, presenting new possibilities for evolution that transcends the boundary between life and machine.

I create a wide variety of things using paper and a utility knife. By inventing a unique technique of layering black and white paper, I have established a new way of expressing paper cutting. In 2012, I moved to New York and began my artistic activities. In the same year, I held a solo exhibition at the prestigious Jadite gallery. I was interviewed by the New York Times and received high praise. In recent years, I have won an award at the World Exhibition of Japanese-French Contemporary Art (National Art Center, Tokyo), been selected for the Ecole de Paris exhibition (Place des Vosges, France), and was specially recommended for an exhibition at the Setubal Museum in Portugal, expanding the scope of my activities to the world. I announced a collaborative work with Theseus Chan in Comme des Garçons DM. In 2018, I changed my name from KROUD to Hirano Chiaki. This work consists of a stack of white and black paper with the different cut ends. Humans have created new value by destroying nature only among animals. Insects gained wings in their bodies over 100 million years, but humans demanded new value from the outside by repeating destruction and creation. The value created will be destroyed, and the conversion to new value will begin immediately. This is the new form of evolution chosen by humans. In 2024, looking up at the city of Tokyo, the buildings that were created by the mechanical civilization are raging. It looks as if the city itself is breathing wildly as a life with a will. A creature that expands in a limited space and continues to change its meaning. As Darwin says, organisms that have begun to mutate will mutate without stopping. There is a certain beauty that is never completed. Dissipating energy while being an aggregate of inorganic substances. Tokyo is the evolution of humans.
