Work Details
I was interested in reliefs that are a mixture of indigenous nature images and Christian iconography unique to Romanesque, so I actually spent 4 days doing research visiting monasteries and churches between Paris and Lyon.
The relief is integrated with the structure of the building, draws attention from the outside to the interior, and from the inside to the story, and I think it has the function of connecting the person standing in front of the relief to the invisible world.
As I proceeded with my research, I also learned that there are few Romanesque sculptures that still exist in a beautiful state. (It's a sculpture from around the 10th to 12th century, so it's quite natural, but...)
About half of what I saw was partially or mostly broken, and I don't understand the complete picture.
However, I think it is through this lack of understanding that I can link myself living here and now with past events that occurred in this place, and an imaginary world where monotheistic and polytheistic images that may have been depicted are mixed.
After the research was completed, I immediately created this work at the Parisian lithograph studio [Le Garage Litho].
The motif is a Romanesque sculpture where the sculpture collapsed and I didn't know what was being carved, and I drew something like a fragment of a human being seen by following a line.
I created a 3-color lithograph at [Le Garage Litho], an atelier specializing in lithography in Paris.
