What You Want to Express Through the artwork

I wanted to capture the particular density and atmosphere of Hakata as seen from above: architecture, distance and urban life compressed into a constructed landscape. The painting is less about describing the city literally than about what remains of the experience of looking at it over time.

Production Methods and Tools

Oil on canvas. The painting was developed through several sessions of direct observation from the rooftop of Hakata Station, followed by further work in the studio.

Production Time

Several on-site painting sessions in 2017, followed by additional studio work.

Production Location

Rooftop of Hakata Station and studio, Fukuoka, Japan.

Thoughts on the Artwork and Title

The title refers directly to Hakata, the area of Fukuoka from which the city was observed and painted. The simplicity of the title keeps the work anchored to the actual place from which it originated.

Nicolas Depetris

French Painter & Architect HMONP

Nicolas Depetris is a French painter and architect HMONP working between Menton and Fukuoka. His series Silent Cartography examines what places retain: the traces of labour, construction, weather and time across industrial territories, cities, mountains and coastlines. Working primarily in oil, he rebuilds observed sites through displaced colour, compressed distance and architectural structure, placing human-made forms against slower geological time.
