Book

25.7×18.2×D3.7 cm; 250 pages; Edition 50

On the Same Page takes its title from the physical page of a book while also drawing on the English idiom "on the same page", which means to share the same understanding or perspective. Returning to the phrase's literal meaning, this artist's book reflects on the fundamental nature of books and the act of reading.

At its core, a book is simply a stack of paper, and reading is nothing more than the act of moving those sheets one by one.

The book consists of 250 pages—the same size and number as the stack of paper depicted within it. Printed throughout are photographs of my hands together with an actual paper stack. On the recto (front) pages, the photographs document the process of turning the stack one sheet at a time; on the verso (back) pages, they record the reverse process, with the sheets being piled up one by one. Both sequences unfold chronologically.

As readers turn each page, they physically reenact the action shown in the photographs, experiencing through their own bodies the gradual movement of paper from one side of the stack to the other.

This book functions as a device that draws attention to reading as an intensely physical act—one of moving, turning, and accumulating sheets of paper.
