Lives and works in Tokyo (currently lives in Tochigi Prefecture). ----- [Statement] When I keep a diary, I write my “feelings” for that day, not the events that happened that day. Therefore, similar words are repeatedly lined up in the diary. “What did you do” and “who were you with” have been omitted, so I will use fragments of words as clues later and move forward little by little with the scenes of the day. It doesn't fulfill its essential role as a diary at all. I write and reread such a “useless diary” in the same way and guess the events of the day. The letters are sometimes strong, sometimes weak, punched, and smudged. Sometimes stars and heart symbols were attached — the feelings that oozed through those lines and shapes slowly made me think back nostalgically. People are multifaceted, and they live with cruelty and compassion, purity and cunning, generosity and narrow-mindedness, and by yardsticks whose scales change. I try to hold on to that beautiful distortion so strongly from time to time,
I'm trying to record “traces of the moment” that shake and don't stay. I began drawing by replacing the feelings that seeped into the swaying letters in my diary with the colors, shapes, and matières of the paint. When the colors mix and begin to resonate beautifully, I feel that something that cannot be conveyed in words is gently conveyed. Shimizu Kayoco
