Work Details
今西は生物学の博士号を取得し、その後、九谷焼の技術を学んだ異色の陶芸家である。彼は金沢を拠点として、工芸と自身の研究の対象であった生命現象という異なる領域を横断する活動を展開している。今西は生物を構成する細胞のモチーフを用いて、生命エネルギーが孕むダイナミズムを土という素材を通して表現する。今西を推薦した理由は、彼の作品が「リレーショナル・アート」を考える新たな視座をもたらすと考えたからだ。彼は料亭とのコラボレーションを通じて、自身が制作した陶器を使用した食事会を企画している。そこでは美術品・工芸品が人々の日常生活に溶けこむ。リレーショナル・アートはコミュニケーションを生成する「目に見えない」場に着目してきたが、そこで実際に使われる「目に見える」品々の存在はさほど気に留めてこなかった。今西泰赳の実践は工芸と生物学の交点であるだけではなく、現代アートにこれまでにない観点を持ちこむ。

What is Sticker?
大学では、細胞内小器官ミトコンドリアを中心としたガンや免疫に関する分子生物学研究で博士（理学）取得。その後、陶芸作家に。細胞培養を繰り返す研究生活の中で感じていた、「細胞内のエネルギー」「細胞の増殖、浸潤と躍動」をテーマに、理系のバックグラウンドを活かし、独自の土と釉薬を用いて自己表現作品を制作。奈良県出身。金沢市在住。
