Work Details
This work captures a quiet moment that exists between night and dawn.
By layering images of vessels, plants, and a bird-like presence, it preserves a small narrative hidden within everyday life.
The traces created by chance in the materials remain as marks of time and memory.
With each viewing, the painting invites different emotions and personal reflections to emerge.
It is meant to become a companion piece—one that can be lived with over time and quietly engaged in an ongoing dialogue.
Exhibition View (Snow Ryosha Museum Florence Prize Exhibition – Honorable Mention Award)
Through this work, I sought to capture a quiet moment that exists between night and dawn.
By layering images of vessels, plants, and a bird-like presence, I aimed to evoke traces of memory and emotion hidden within everyday life.
The marks created by chance in the materials remain as evidence of time.
I hope this piece resonates with each viewer’s own memories and feelings, becoming a work that can be engaged with over a long period of time.

Artist
Painter
Li Dan (b. 1997, China) lives and works in Japan. Currently pursuing a master’s degree in Japanese painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design, his practice revolves around the theme of self-love—an exploration of the delicate balance between matter and emotion, solitude and connection. Motifs such as crows, bottles, and plants often appear as symbols of inner reflection and resonance with the surrounding world.
Working primarily with mineral pigments and ink on silk and hemp paper, Li experiments with dyeing, burning, and layering. These processes turn the surface into a silent field of transformation, where pigment, water, and fire leave traces of time.
His paintings do not depict the visible; rather, they evoke the quiet state of “being.” Through the breath of materials and the stillness between gestures, he seeks a space where memory and emotion gently converge.
