Work Details

Medium, acrylic, lacquer spray, and poster-color marker on canvas

Kobayashi is always exploring various styles of painting. Being prolific, his technique continues to evolve as if driven by his chain of work that unfold as series. Resemblances to modern painting can be found within the street essence; a sense of editing as if to shuffle an image by program can also be felt in his work. I have hopes for Kobayashi to establish unique compositions and installation-like presentation methods, as he pushes his exploration even further.

I engage with the concepts of layers and taste in my practice. Information gains depth through multi-tiers of layers; I believe that the noise (misalignment of information) that is generated through this process, obscures the absoluteness of a single meaning and adds room for interpretation. By clouding the viewer’s visual information, their sense of perception and judgement (taste) is challenged. I attempt to express this sense that persistently comes with choosing and reconstructing, by purposefully adding complexity to the information that is presented. Across three series, the work explores painting through different structural approaches. Spray-based layering examines how changes in speed and paint output generate visual effects. Performative painting emphasizes bodily movement and its tension with academic discipline. Another series focuses on discarded information in an over-saturated society, treating it as living matter and framing painting as an act of remembrance Art.
